A Pair of Cuba-Headed Relief Vessels Listed Missing subsequent to Leaving Mexico.
A comprehensive search and recovery operation is currently under way in the Caribbean region for two lost sailboats loaded with humanitarian supplies en route from the Mexican coast to Cuba.
Military Rescue Operations Deployed
The Mexican government has deployed naval assets and reconnaissance aircraft to locate the two vessels, which were carrying at least nine personnel, per a navy statement.
The vessels had been projected to reach Cuba's capital on Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been a complete lack of contact from them and no confirmation of their safe arrival, authorities reported.
The Situation of Humanitarian Support to Cuba
The island nation has relied heavily on Mexico's over the last several weeks, as the country endures multiple nationwide blackouts.
"Both skippers and their teams are seasoned mariners, and both vessels are equipped with appropriate safety systems and signalling equipment," an official involved in the effort stated.
The nine individuals on board are nationals of Poland, France, Cuba and the US. Mexican authorities said it has established contact with coast guard agencies from those nations along with their consular staff.
"The group is collaborating completely with the relevant authorities and remain confident in the ability of the crews to make it to Cuba without incident," the statement continued.
Previous Humanitarian Mission
Earlier in the week, the Cuban government publicly celebrated and warmly received a separate vessel that had transported a significant amount of relief supplies to the nation.
That boat, called "a new Granma" after the boat in which the revolutionary leader came back to Cuba to start the revolution in the 1950s, brought solar panels, pharmaceuticals, infant formula, bikes and food.
Larger Political Backdrop
Non-governmental organizations and volunteers have been at the forefront of efforts to bring essential supplies to Cuba beginning in January, a period which saw a energy blockade on the island nation began.
International organizations have since raised alarms about "dire" shortages of supplies, with in excess of fifty thousand operations called off in Cuba amid electricity supply constraints.
Diplomatic pressure have been ramped up lately, with statements from several leaders underscoring the delicate nature of diplomatic ties.
Reacting to recent statements, a prominent government figure declared that "the political system of Cuba is not subject to discussion."
Accounts suggest that preliminary steps of talks were initiated, although their present status remains not publicly known.
The maritime authorities stated it was dedicated to using the full extent of its capabilities at its command to locate the sailboats and ensure the well-being of the crews.
As of now, there has been no official comment on the disappeared vessels by the Cuban leadership.
