A Story of Surprising Kindness: The Time a University Student Allowed Me to Sleep on Her Dorm Ground
Back in the year 2006, My journey took me to Canberra for a medical school interview. I figured to book a place to stay upon arrival, but when I arrived, a large conference was taking place and every single backpackers hostels and budget accommodation were completely sold out.
As a visitor from the city-state of Singapore, the idea crossed my mind maybe I could just sleep at the airport – but quickly found that airport, in contrast to Changi Airport, closes all night. Not knowing what my next move should be and feeling increasingly desperate, I hopped on a bus into town and found myself drifting towards a gaming venue, thinking I might spend those hours in an establishment operating all night. That wouldn’t put me in the ideal condition for acing an interview the following day, but as a student on a tight budget, I couldn’t afford.
The world needs more individuals with such compassion.
Apparently, I appeared out of place since a woman noticed me walking aimlessly through the city center and wondered whether I needed help. I shared my predicament and immediately she suggested I could sleep on the ground of her dormitory at ANU – an ideal turn of events, given that my my interview would take place the next morning. She went further by offering me some free dinner: a leftover sandwiches she had from her part-time job. I had access to the bathroom and somewhere safe to rest to spend the night.
In retrospect, it’s clear to me the enormous leap of faith she undertook as a woman allowing a guy she’d just met sleep on her floor. In those days I was in my own unawareness and not even thinking to the potential danger. As a dad now, I am astonished she did that – yet deeply appreciative.
I didn’t end up study at that university, and I never saw her again, but I’ve never forgotten her selfless deed of kindness. I hope the universe has rewarded her generosity many times over. Our society requires more people like that woman.
