"Do you know when you'll be chatting with Haim?" a text pops up. "My request was to ask if I can be their fourth member."

There's just a single issue: The sender also longs to be the Haims' additional sibling. And we're in plentiful company. Multiple famous supporters have openly petitioned for the honor.

It's clear an irresistible appeal is going on. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana launched their musical journey performing shows at neighborhood delis with their family. Today, they are multiple Grammy Award hopefuls.

Like all the best ensembles, they're a inseparable unit. Their videos frequently feature them marching in sync down the avenues of Los Angeles. In concert, they jam with such unfettered exuberance you inevitably think, "I want to be part of that, too."

"The amount of times on tour that fans came up to us and said, 'Watching you live, I picked up a drum kit'," states Alana, the youngest of the Haim siblings. "That's the greatest compliment. It is a prize in itself. We have succeeded if we can encourage people to start a band."

"Therefore all is invited to be the honorary part of the family."

Award Nod

The trio are connecting from their homes, where they're resting up after an lengthy tour in promoting their new album, I Quit.

They're currently celebrating the news it's been nominated for best rock album at the Grammys – with Haim the pioneering all-woman band ever in the running for the trophy.

"I follow the lists every year, so it sort of feels like a surreal movie when your name is called," says Alana. "I needed to phone my sisters to say, 'Am I hearing this right or am I imagining things'?"

The weight of the accolade is deeply felt by the trio.

"We truly set out to make a rock album this time, so it's a huge milestone," adds Alana. "Yet we're just thankful for the pioneers that inspired us."

Personal Turmoil and Humour

The record emerged from a phase of personal change. All three sisters ended up single, and the music inhabits that odd liminal space where you're happy to be free, but not yet ready to let go.

The words follow departures and goodbyes. The sisters desire love, but not the kind of love they've got. You can hear them determining in real life who they aspire to be.

"I love summary, yes," says Danielle. "I Quit is essentially a mantra. You have to actively work on blocking the criticism and saying, 'I don't give what people think'."

Development of Style

That newfound toughness called for a fresh approach – more organic and immediate than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who worked on producing the album, that was founded on the drum sound.

"Percussion is such a detailed thing, and I focus so intensely about it," she says.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the subject of our memoir," laughs Alana. "I always say, our albums won't commence until we find the ideal drum sound."

Stories and Shared Laughter

The band's candor inspired the album's rollout, where the sisters revealed some of their romantic horror stories.

One man broke up with Este over a medical consideration. Alana shared a story of flying to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a high five at midnight.

"During these setbacks, you just feel like there's no hope," notes Alana. "Therefore to be able to laugh at those stories and have them tell you wilder stories, it's therapeutic."

An Assured Path

One can easily sense a shift in the band. These days, Haim are more confident of their standing in the industry.

They're top-billed acts, with chart-topping albums and an international fan base.

However the band will consistently be their top commitment.

"We have been playing music since I was little," concludes Alana. "It's like no alternative that we were destined for. And I'm really thankful we've reached this point and we're still kicking."
