Cameron Norrie secured the most important success of his career by rebounding from a early deficit to overcome top-ranked player Carlos Alcaraz 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the second round of the Paris Masters.

While he had earlier defeated Alcaraz on two prior meetings, this victory marks Norrie's initial win over a current world top-ranked player.

"Enormous. So big for me," commented Norrie, who is now the fifth British man in history to overcome a global number one. "Coming back from health issues last year, I lost in the initial match of qualies here. I just aimed to enjoy my performance in the closing months of the year. To get a victory like this, it's the greatest success of my tennis journey, my initial victory over the world No 1 and probably the most in-form player in the sport right now."

The British player, ranked No 31, also ended Alcaraz's impressive sequence of nine straight final appearances and 17 consecutive premier event successes, which was the best series of performances in the Spaniard's young professional path.

The top seed seemed to be advancing smoothly towards victory at the start as he sailed in the first set. Nevertheless, the British contender slowly battled back into the match by serving with greater precision and engaging the Spanish opponent into extended, physical exchanges. His unceasing shot tolerance and reliability steadily made an impact.

During large parts of the battle, Alcaraz performed well on serve but he found it challenging to locate his rhythm with his rally strokes. The rising talent seemed notably uneasy striking his signature shot, which has been the top weapon in the game for a large part of this season, producing 29 forehand miscues and a combined of 54 mistakes. Opposing him, Norrie offered Alcaraz so few mistakes, maintaining his consistency, physicality and depth throughout while delivering effective serves and choosing his moments to force himself into the court and play aggressively.
