People have assembled around the country to mark the second anniversary since the Hamas-led attack on October 7th, 2023, as negotiations continued in the neighboring country over an end to the war in Gaza.

The assault led to more than 1,200 people losing their lives and 251 others taken away to Gaza as hostages. It was the single most fatal day for the Jewish community since the World War II.

Israel reacted by beginning a defensive operation in Gaza which has taken over 67,000 people, as reported by the area's Hamas-administered health ministry. Its figures are seen as reliable by the UN and other international bodies.

"Our bloodthirsty enemies have struck forcefully, but they have not defeated us," the leader added on that day.

He also promised to "achieve all the objectives of the war: the return of all the kidnapped, the destruction of the Hamas regime and the promise that Gaza will not pose a threat to Israel".

Memorial Ceremonies Across Israel

The Israeli government postponed official memorials until 16 October - after the conclusion of the festive season - but ceremonies still occurred throughout the country on Tuesday.

A remembrance service for the relatives of people killed in the Hamas incident was conducted in Tel Aviv. Put together by the affected families, it was broadcast throughout Israeli television channels.

A period earlier, a minute's silence was respected around the country.

Ceasefire Discussions in Egypt

At the same time, Israeli and Hamas delegations gathered in the Egyptian Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh for a follow-up session of third-party negotiations to examine the provisions of the agreement.

A senior delegate knowledgeable about the talks revealed that an late session of indirect talks started at evening in Egypt.

The official said the day's discussions finished without concrete outcomes, because of conflicting views over the recommended Israeli pullout plans from Gaza and over assurances Hamas demands to guarantee Israel does not recommence hostilities after the initial stage of the arrangement.

He added that the discussions are "tough and have yet to produce any major advancement," but pointed out that facilitators are making efforts to narrow the disparities between the two sides.

Key Issues in Discussions

  • An enduring truce
  • The trade of the hostages still kept by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
  • The removal of troops from Gaza
  • Plans for assistance distribution
  • Post-war administration of the territory

Civilian Sentiment

In Tel Aviv's memorial area previously, young Hagar - whose sibling survived the assault on the outdoor event, where 378 people were lost their lives and dozens more were taken hostage by Hamas fighters - told: "No location seems like home any longer and until each abducted person return none of us will have peace of mind."

"After we see all home returned, we can relax anew. Then we can start to heal," she added.

In front of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's residence in the capital, people gathered to express their support for the families of the captives. Israel states nearly fifty remain in captivity in Gaza, 20 of whom are thought to be living.

Activist one woman explained: "We must do every compromise necessary for the abducted to come back home. But we sincerely need guarantees that we will be protected."

Surveys now consistently show that around seventy percent of Israelis desire the conflict to conclude in as payment for the liberation of the abducted.

Palestinian Conditions

At the site of Nova festival, grieving people assembled to honor the dead.

From the site, the sound of military attacks and explosions could be heard just a short distance away in Gaza, where local people said the severe Israeli attacks persisted.

In the urban center, attacks were noted in the morning of Tuesday in the west side district, sector and Nasr areas and in the east side area of Sheikh Radwan, as well Shati refugee camp to the northwestern area.

"When the night comes, the anxiety comes with it," relocated urban resident a mother, whose teenage son was killed by an Israeli air strike earlier, described.

"Me and my three children are fearful of the bombings. All the night we are resting together, embracing, particularly my smallest child who rests his head on me the entire evening."

"Constantly we look at the reports to see what happened. And I'm worried that this halt will not be achieved and that the war will resume to us."

Humanitarian Emergency

Al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City announced it had received the bodies of half dozen people by the midday, including a trio who lost their lives in an Israeli attack in the south part area.

Another medical facility in the southern city of Khan Younis indicated two more fatalities had been transported. A person was lost his life by Israeli troops while seeking help to the south region, health workers reported.
