The found-guilty coup-monger – who had been subject to residential detention in his estate while a number of judicial steps and petitions proceed – is largely predicted to be imprisoned in the coming days, amidst mounting talk that he will be sent to a infamous high-security facility.
Past Statements on Convicts
Over Bolsonaro’s four-decade political career, the far-right ex- soldier displayed little compassion for Brazil’s jailed individuals.
“For what reason must we give these lowlifes a easy time?” he once pondered. “They should just get fucked, full-fucking-stop. That's my view.”
On another occasion, Bolsonaro stated: “Unless you desire to wind up behind bars, the only thing required is not sexual assault, kidnap or rob.”
Prison Destination Debate
But the prospect of Bolsonaro himself ending up in the Papuda prison top-security prison in Brasília has appalled allies, four of whom this week inspected the facility in an apparent bid to prevent the high court from sending him there.
Senator Lucas, a lawmaker from Bolsonaro’s Liberal party who was part of that quartet, stated he predicted the elderly figure to be imprisoned in the coming fortnight and was concerned his location could be Papuda.
He asserted Bolsonaro’s serious digestive ailments – the consequence of a almost deadly stabbing during the last political campaign – meant it would be risky to keep the former president there. “His health is extremely serious. He cannot to cope if they move him to Papuda … It would be dreadful,” said the senator, who also worried about packed cells and the standard of jail cuisine.
While visiting Papuda, Lucas recalled observing cells containing four dozen prisoners: “That’s practically one square metre per prisoner.
“We spoke to the prisoners and they grumble, unsurprisingly, of the horrible food,” continued the senator.
Backers Voice Concerns
He is not the sole person expressing views prior to the former president’s anticipated incarceration.
Authoring in a major daily, a different supporter, the former government official Fábio Wajngarten, bemoaned the “severe” end to Bolsonaro’s “flawless” political career and asserted Brazil was about to experience “the largest wrong in its record”.
“This is an unfairness that eats away the spirits of many people in Brazil,” the former minister said.
Divided Popular Opinion

But his expected jailing has also warmed the hearts of many others who think he ought to be imprisoned for conspiring to prevent the elected leader from assuming office – and even scheming to have him murdered.
Congressman Otoni, a politician for the sitting leader's political party, said: “Nobody wants Bolsonaro to be placed in a hole. No one desires Bolsonaro to be placed in solitary confinement. No one wants Bolsonaro to lack food or for him to have to sleep on the floor. We desire him to obtain proper handling – but proper treatment behind bars. He must not carry on being his personal jailer for his lifetime.”
Otoni was struck by how Bolsonaro backers, who have long applauding the harsh handling of prisoners, had abruptly realized to their entitlements. “Just now has the far-right – which has repeatedly argued that civil liberties were not for criminals – opted to visit a prison to learn what conditions are truly like,” he stated.
“The former president is a offender,” Otoni insisted, but that did not mean he earned “degrading, demeaning treatment”.
Potential Jail Conditions

According to reports, the cell Bolsonaro could anticipate inhabit in Papudinha is about 260 square feet – about the area of two parking spaces – and includes a 130 square foot WC with a bathing area and a 130 square foot terrace. “The ex-president might be allowed to have a television and also a cooler in his cell as long as they were supplied by his relatives,” the report suggested.
