LA Battles Record-Breaking High Temperatures Just Days Following Severe Winter Weather.
Following a week of heavy downpours that resulted in floodwaters across sections of the city, LA is now seeing unseasonably high temperatures for the end of February.
Record-Shattering Heat
On Friday midday, the mercury reached ninety-one degrees Fahrenheit in the city center, according to meteorologists. This exceeds the previous daily record for February 27th, which was 31 degrees Celsius (88 Fahrenheit) and was set in the previous year.
"Unusually high temperatures" were noted on NWS maps for the region.
Public Health Advisories
Authorities stated that Friday's weather posed an "higher threat for heat illness" for those at risk. Their recommendations featured:
- Keeping well-hydrated.
- Reducing outdoor activities during the peak heat of the day.
- Ensuring you do not leave kids or animals unattended in a parked vehicle.
A Dramatic Reversal
This dramatic increase in temperature comes on the heels of a powerful storm system that struck the area earlier in the week. That system brought thunderstorms, high winds, and heavy snow to mountainous regions, triggering evacuation orders for countless residents.
Unfortunately, the storm also triggered a massive avalanche in the Tahoe area, which left nine people dead from.
Forecast Ahead
The outlook suggests some relief is coming. Temperatures were forecast to drop to around 61°F (16°C) in downtown LA by late Friday.
Additional areas that reached ninety degrees featured Long Beach, Burbank, and Woodland Hills. Elsewhere, Santa Maria, Oxnard, Camarillo, and Westwood were projected to see the high 80s.
In the coming days, central LA can expect readings in the eighties, with cooler weather likely for the following week.
