More than 50 unaccompanied young refugees who disappeared shortly after reaching the UK and while being looked after by government agencies are remain unaccounted for, based on figures obtained.

A significant number of the missing children came in small boats or concealed in the rear compartments of vehicles and are thought to have been taken by criminal networks. A specific county is frequently the place where they arrive.

Government Figures Shows Alarming Numbers

Freedom of information records has recorded 345 children disappearing from the region, with 56 of those yet to be located.

From 2021 and 2023, when temporary accommodations for children were run in addition to hotels in different regions, 132 children went missing from these facilities. From this group, 108 were later found but 24 are remain unaccounted for.

From 2020 and August 2025, 213 children disappeared from care facilities for these minors, with 182 located and 32 yet to be accounted for.

Ethnic Composition of Vanished Minors

Policy Shifts and Persistent Problems

In December 2023, after a extended judicial process concerning solitary migrant children disappearing from all hotels, the procedure of routinely accommodating children in hotels was ruled unlawful.

Subsequently, agencies pledged to strengthen security for these children by extending the use of welcome hubs. Since that court ruling a further 44 children have gone missing from such locations, with 10 yet to be found and 34 located.
