New York Jets Head Coach Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After NYC Shooting
Jets head coach Aaron Glenn revealed that he has been in contact with cornerback Kris Boyd and is confident the player will be OK after being shot in central New York early Sunday morning.
Glenn noted that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “upbeat” during their recent conversation.
“That’s what eases my mind, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn said Wednesday. “His wife and child, they are holding up and he will come through this without issue.”
It remained unclear when Boyd could be discharged the hospital, where his condition is described as serious yet stable.
“Not certain at the moment,” the coach said. “But I will say this, just talking to him, he felt really upbeat. Once more, that’s what gives me comfort, given his positive frame of mind and he’s talking that way.”
New York police shared video stills earlier this week of an individual wanted in the incident involving Boyd. What prompted the attack is still being looked into and officials stated it is unknown if Boyd was singled out. No other injuries according to reports.
The incident occurred in the early morning on Sunday morning in the area between the famous arena and the iconic square. Boyd, twenty-nine, was taken to a medical center after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, as reported. The perpetrator got away.
Glenn said Boyd has been on his mind “a ton” since he heard about the shooting. The coach said that Boyd and his spouse just had a newborn.
“The first thing I thought about, he has a new baby,” Glenn remarked. “My mind went to his family, I’m thinking about his kid and I hope he recovers fully. That was my main concern.
“A certain process is underway, that I won’t detail, but I’m happy at the fact that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.”
Boyd hasn’t played during the current season, his first with the Jets, after going on the season-ending injured reserve list on 18 August with a shoulder issue that needed an operation.
He signed with New York as a new signing in spring and was projected as a significant contributor of the team’s updated special teams under Glenn and ST coordinator the special teams coach. Unfortunately, he sustained an injury during a training camp practice on early August and was carted from the field.
Boyd has remained around the team during the entire campaign while recovering from the shoulder injury.
“He remains involved with our activities,” Glenn stated. “I mean, he comes to the games all the time. His commitment is total. Given his status as a special teams standout, he’s done a really good job of helping the other guys we have.”
Boyd, from Texas, played his first four seasons with Minnesota after getting drafted in the seventh round by the Vikings out of UT in 2019. He signed with the Arizona Cardinals in 2023 and later was with the Texans subsequently. Boyd signed a one-year contract valued at $1.6 million with New York in the spring.
