New York's next mayor confirms plans to make his home in historic Gracie Mansion
The city's incoming mayor, Zohran Mamdani, has decided to live in the iconic Gracie Mansion, vacating the affordable apartment that sparked debate throughout his election bid.
An Iconic Home
Dating back to 1799, Gracie Mansion has served as the official residence for most New York City mayors since the post-war period.
However, Mamdani, for whom rent control is a core platform, was not quick to announce this decision immediately following his triumph in November.
"The choice was based on the security of my family and the importance of dedicating my full attention on implementing the platform on affordability voters elected me on," Mamdani said in a statement.
Thanking a Neighborhood
He resided in the Queens borough of Astoria, a district famous for its diverse immigrant populations and global cuisine.
"To Astoria: many thanks for demonstrating what is great about New York City," he expressed.
"Although my address will change there, it will forever remain inside me and the work I do," he said.
Campaign Controversy
Throughout his race for mayor, Mamdani linked his key pledge – a rent freeze – to his own housing situation.
Yet his critics, most notably former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, attacked Mamdani for occupying the affordable housing despite the fact that he came from a well-known family.
Previous Exceptions
Some mayors have opted to reside at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the billionaire entrepreneur, chose to live in his personal mansion on Manhattan's Upper East Side for his tenure, which concluded in 2012.
In his view, Bloomberg said he believed it should be a place for official events, and pushed for a major refurbishment of the aging mansion.
A Vastly Different Setting
As he settles into Gracie Mansion near his first day on 1 January, he will be surrounded by an environment very different than his modest Astoria home.
Featuring butter yellow paint, forest green window covers, and white railings, Gracie Mansion is an ornate structure overlooking the East River.
Internally, the ground floor of the classically designed mansion is decorated consistent with the home's early 19th-century origins.
The estate, which allegedly has five bedrooms, also has fortified protections to safeguard the mayor and his family.
Supernatural Speculation
A number of people have suggested that Gracie Mansion also has ghostly inhabitants.
Chirlane McCray, the partner of ex-mayor Bill De Blasio, informed the press that doors would sometimes open and closed by themselves, and the floors emitted odd sounds.
Former Mayor Eric Adams was even more convinced. "No matter what people claim," he declared in 2022. "It has spirits in there, man."
The Value of Rent Stabilization
His former home is under rent control, a policy where the city regulates on how much property owners can increase rent each year.
New Yorkers view rent-stabilized housing as valuable lifelines as the housing expenses outpaces the average income.
Records showed Mamdani was paying approximately $2,300 each month for his apartment.
According to the property website Zillow, the typical monthly cost for a studio or one-bedroom in New York City is $3,500 a month.
