A prolonged deep freeze has enveloped a bitter and extended period of frigid weather, with readings persisting from 20 to 40 degrees below zero for weeks. A reading of -55.7 Celsius was logged in Braeburn, Yukon, on Tuesday, its coldest December temperature in nearly five decades.
Enduring Chill of Extreme Cold
Meanwhile, Mayo and Dawson endured over two straight weeks of nights below -40C, with Mayo plunging to -50.4C on Monday. The capital, Whitehorse, likewise saw a series of ten nights when readings fell to minus 30 degrees or lower.
This Arctic air mass pushed further southward through Christmas week. Christmas night saw Edmonton's temperatures plummet below minus 28C.
December 26th was anticipated to usher in lows of at least -20C through a wide swath, from Edmonton in the west to Quebec in the east.
Expected to Continue into the New Year
This harsh winter weather is expected to continue into the new year. Authorities have cautioned about potential power failures in the Yukon soon, as the territory’s power grid comes under strain from peak power usage levels.
The lengthy cold snap originates from a stationary polar vortex across the northern part of the continent this month, which funnels frigid northern air southward. Next week, the cold air mass is expected to retreat north slowly, permitting warmer Pacific winds to flow over the US and into parts of southern Canada.
Dramatic Difference to American Heat
In stark contrast, parts of the US experienced historically high temperatures for Christmas as temperatures soared about 15-30C above the seasonal average. In many areas, conditions felt more typical of April or May than late December.
Multiple states established new Christmas temperature highs. In Oklahoma, Oklahoma City hit 25C on Tuesday, exceeding the old record of 22C from 1982. Metropolitan areas such as Austin, Dallas, and Charlotte similarly saw thermometers rise past the 25C mark.
Heat-Dome Effect Drives the Heat
Warmer-than-normal conditions are forecast to last for the remainder of the week and beyond, with unseasonable heat forecast to sweep into the south-eastern states later in the week.
The unseasonable temperatures are powered by a robust atmospheric ridge extending from the desert south-west towards the north and east, which generates a heat-dome phenomenon. This setup creates an extensive zone of high atmospheric pressure over a large portion of North America, trapping warm air near the surface. Descending air compresses and adiabatically warms, fostering the buildup of exceptional warmth.
